Sekotong Lombok Travel Guide: What to Know Before Staying on the Southwest Coast

Published: August 2026

If you are considering staying in Sekotong, expect a quieter and more spread-out side of Lombok, where days tend to revolve around the coast, nearby islands and time at your accommodation rather than a busy town centre. It suits travellers who value space, privacy and slower days, with the Secret Gilis close enough to make island hopping a natural part of the trip.

Sekotong is not the part of Lombok most first-time visitors hear about first.

Kuta and Mandalika are better known for the southern beaches and surf scene. Senggigi has long been one of Lombok’s established visitor areas. Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air have become destinations in their own right.

Sekotong sits away from those better-known areas on Lombok’s southwest coast, and staying here creates a different kind of holiday.

Instead of choosing accommodation because you want to walk out into a busy restaurant strip each evening, you tend to choose Sekotong because you want the accommodation, coastline and surrounding islands to become part of the experience.

For guests staying at The Pinnacle Villa Lombok, that might mean waking early enough to see the sunrise from the infinity pool, spending a day exploring nearby islands by boat, coming home to an air-conditioned villa, then deciding whether dinner means going out, cooking together or arranging a local cook.

There is plenty to do. The difference is that you do not need to fill every hour.

Where is Sekotong in Lombok?

Sekotong is in West Lombok on the island’s southwest coast.

Lombok itself lies immediately east of Bali in Indonesia’s West Nusa Tenggara province. Its landscape and visitor areas are varied, from Mount Rinjani in the north to the beaches of the south, Senggigi on the western coastline and the small offshore islands found around different parts of Lombok. Sasak culture is central to the island’s identity.

Sekotong Barat sits within this southwest corner of the island and is particularly well placed for exploring the group of smaller islands commonly called the Secret Gilis.

The Pinnacle Villa Lombok is in Sekotong Barat. From Lombok International Airport, allow approximately 60 to 80 minutes by road depending on the route and traffic. Transfers are best organised in advance.

What is Sekotong actually like?

The first thing to understand is that Sekotong is not a concentrated resort town.

The coastline is more spread out, with local communities, stretches of coast, hills, small resorts and villas rather than one central tourist precinct where everything is within a few minutes’ walk.

That is an important distinction because it is part of what makes staying here appealing, but it also changes how you should plan your trip.

If your ideal holiday involves stepping outside your hotel and choosing between dozens of restaurants, bars and shops each night, another part of Lombok may suit you better.

If you would rather have a private base, spend long stretches of the day by the water, arrange a boat when you want to explore and use a driver for trips further afield, Sekotong starts to make considerably more sense.

This is also why it is worth planning a little before you arrive. Private transport, groceries and any particular food or drink you want at your accommodation are easier to think about in advance than once you have settled in.

The Secret Gilis are one of the biggest reasons to stay in Sekotong

One of the advantages of basing yourself in southwest Lombok is being close to an entirely different group of Gili islands.

The name “Gili” refers to a small island in local usage, so the word does not refer only to Lombok’s famous Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air.

Those three islands sit off Lombok’s northwest coast.

Around Sekotong in the southwest, there are numerous smaller islands, with Gili Nanggu, Gili Sudak, Gili Kedis, Gili Gede and Gili Asahan among the names visitors are likely to encounter when researching the area.

They are often collectively referred to as the Secret Gilis.

Island hopping and snorkelling are among Darren and Simone’s favourite ways to experience this part of Lombok, and staying in Sekotong means you can build a day around the islands rather than travelling across Lombok simply to reach them.

The exact islands visited, departure point, conditions and snorkelling stops will depend on the boat operator and the day, so it is better to plan an island trip with some flexibility rather than treating a particular route as guaranteed.

A boat day does not have to mean rushing from island to island

One of the nicest ways to experience Sekotong is not necessarily to see as many islands as possible.

A day can be as simple as choosing a few stops for swimming or snorkelling, spending time on the water and allowing lunch to become part of the outing.

One of Darren and Simone’s recommendations is to include Gili Asahan and have lunch at Nautilus Restaurant. Nautilus is part of Gili Asahan Eco Lodge and offers a predominantly Italian menu alongside other dishes. Opening days, reservations, transport and boat arrangements should always be checked for the dates of your stay.

For many guests, this is the appeal of staying in the southwest. You can have a proper day out without feeling as though every day needs to become an expedition across Lombok.

You will probably want a driver

Sekotong rewards travellers who are comfortable not having everything on their doorstep.

For longer outings, grocery stops and exploring other parts of Lombok, arranging a private driver is generally the easiest option.

The Pinnacle hosts can help connect guests with local drivers and airport transfers, as well as boat, diving and snorkelling operators. These are separate services, subject to availability and additional costs where applicable.

This distinction matters when planning a stay here.

Sekotong gives you space, but the trade-off is that you should not plan your holiday around walking everywhere. A little organisation before arrival makes the slower location much easier to enjoy once you are here.

What about food and restaurants in Sekotong?

You have several ways to approach food when staying in southwest Lombok.

At The Pinnacle, the villa has a full kitchen, so guests can self-cater when they want to. Continental breakfast provisions such as milk, cereal and bread are stocked for each booking.

A cooked Indonesian or Western breakfast can also be arranged at additional cost. It needs to be ordered before noon the previous day and is normally available Monday to Saturday. Current choices include dishes such as nasi goreng and mie goreng alongside Western egg breakfasts.

A local cook can also prepare selected Indonesian dinner dishes at the villa, subject to availability. The meal and ingredients are priced separately, so this should be thought of as an arrangement the hosts can help facilitate rather than an included private-chef service.

There are also places to eat around the wider Sekotong area and on the islands. The Pinnacle’s current recommendations include nearby resort dining as well as island restaurants, giving guests options without pretending Sekotong has the restaurant density of a larger tourism centre.

If food is an important part of your holiday, this is another area where a small amount of planning pays off.

Can you spend a whole day doing very little?

Absolutely, and we would make room for one.

One of the easiest mistakes to make when visiting Lombok is assuming every good day needs to involve seeing somewhere new.

Sekotong works particularly well when you allow yourself some days that do not have an itinerary.

At The Pinnacle, the private infinity pool looks across the coastal lagoon towards the Secret Gilis, with Mount Rinjaniwhich is clearly seen most mornings, sometimes it is covered by cloud as it is a volcanic mountain after all. There is a shaded bale, outdoor dining, indoor living spaces, a full kitchen, bar and pool table, so the villa has deliberately been designed as somewhere you can actually spend the day rather than simply sleep between excursions.

An in-villa massage can also be arranged through a local therapist, subject to availability and additional cost.

Some days might begin with breakfast and end with dinner without anybody feeling particularly motivated to leave.

That is totally allowed and encouraged 😉

What is the beach like around The Pinnacle?

This is worth explaining properly because the southwest coastline does not behave like one uniform swimming beach.

Directly in front of The Pinnacle, across the road, is a public beach and shallow tidal lagoon. It is generally lightly used and there are usually no breaking waves immediately in front of the villa, but the depth changes with the tide.

It is not a private beach and swimming conditions should not be assumed from photographs or from one particular time of day.

We prefer describing it for what it is: part of the changing coastal landscape in front of the villa.

When swimming and snorkelling are the plan, we can direct you to some wonderful local operators to choose appropriate beaches and island stops according to the conditions of the day.

Is Sekotong a good base for exploring the rest of Lombok?

It can be, as long as you remember that Lombok is an island worth exploring region by region rather than treating every attraction as nearby.

The southern coastline around Kuta and Mandalika has a very different character, with surf beaches and more developed visitor areas. Senggigi is another established tourism centre on the west coast. Further north, Mount Rinjani and Lombok’s waterfalls create an entirely different style of trip.

These places can form part of a wider Lombok holiday, but routes and journey times need to be considered properly.

Sekotong makes most sense as a base when the southwest itself is part of the reason you are coming.

If your list already includes the Secret Gilis, snorkelling, private villa time and slower coastal days, you are starting in the right part of the island rather than travelling there repeatedly from somewhere else.

Who will enjoy staying in Sekotong?

Sekotong tends to suit travellers who enjoy having a little more control over their day.

Couples can spend most of their stay privately and choose when they want to venture out. Families and groups can use a villa as a shared base rather than coordinating several hotel rooms. Friends can spend a day on a boat together and come back somewhere with enough room to spread out afterwards.

At The Pinnacle, four bedrooms comfortably sleep eight adults, with one super king master bedroom and three queen bedrooms. Up to two children can sleep on a sofa lounge by prior arrangement, and a cot is additional to that configuration.

For families with young children, it is also important to know that the infinity pool is unfenced, and children need to be supervised around it.

Sekotong may be less suitable if the centre of your holiday is nightlife, shopping or having a large choice of cafes and restaurants within walking distance.

Neither version of Lombok is inherently better. They simply create different holidays.

How many days should you spend in Sekotong?

There is no ideal number for everyone.

If you are coming primarily for an island trip, Sekotong can be part of a wider Lombok itinerary. If the point of your holiday is to slow down, enjoy the villa and explore the southwest properly, staying longer gives you room to separate your boat day from your pool day rather than squeezing both into the same itinerary.

Weather and sea conditions can also affect boat-based activities, which is another good reason not to make every day dependent on one particular plan.

The question we would ask instead is: how much of your holiday do you actually want scheduled?

Sekotong tends to reward leaving some space.

Is Sekotong worth staying in, rather than visiting for the day?

If the Secret Gilis are the only thing you want to see in southwest Lombok, a day trip may be enough for you.

If you are looking for a quieter base where island trips, private villa time and the coastline are the holiday rather than a single excursion, staying in Sekotong gives you a much better sense of the area.

It also changes the pace.

You do not have to arrive, complete an island itinerary and immediately drive back across Lombok. You can return from the boat, shower, swim, have dinner and decide tomorrow’s plans tomorrow.

For Darren and Simone, that ability to genuinely switch off was part of what drew them to Lombok after years of travelling. With a large blended family, they also understood how different a holiday feels when there is enough shared space to come together and enough room for everyone to retreat when they want to.

That thinking shaped The Pinnacle as a private four-bedroom villa rather than simply somewhere to sleep between sightseeing days.

Staying at The Pinnacle Villa Lombok

The Pinnacle Villa Lombok is privately booked for one group at a time in Sekotong.

The villa has four bedrooms, a private infinity pool, indoor and outdoor dining, a shaded bale, full kitchen, air-conditioned living areas, a bar and full-size pool table. The view extends across the tidal lagoon towards the Secret Gilis, with Mount Rinjani appearing in the distance when conditions are clear.

You can plan a full day exploring Lombok.

You can arrange a boat and spend the day around the islands.

Or you can decide that today is the day nobody is going anywhere.

That is one of the best ways to understand Sekotong.

It gives you somewhere worth coming back to, and enough space in the itinerary to enjoy where you already are.

If southwest Lombok sounds like the kind of stay you are planning, explore The Pinnacle Villa or get in touch with Darren and Simone to ask about your dates and what you would like to experience while you are here.
